New Features for GooseRef
- Revised the checking of the e.mail address entered for those folks who want to e.mail results of a search to themselves. Uses a way slick and gnarly javascript to do this.
- Added a simple link to output "recent papers" - currently set to the most recent 25 (based on a reverse chronological sort). Nothing fancy here...uses an URL which passes some variables to the perl search engine.
- Changed the aesthetics in a fundamental way. Still loads quick, but has enhanced contrast on smaller, low-res screens. Changed the boolean selector to a drop-down select list.
- Fixed a pernicious bug in the e.mail system - for some reason it was truncating mailouts of long searches. The reasons are/were bizarre, but I think I've fixed it.
- Added ability to look up contact information for given researcher - the idea behind this is - you see a reference with someones name, and if you want to contact said individual, the contact information is online. Way slick...
- Added phrase searching to the boolean menu - does the obvious thing.
- Added Latin names to all references - now you can search in a somewhat more precise fashion if your primary interest is references devoted to a single species.
- Made significant changes to the way that e.mailed searches are handled. No longer need to do a redundant second search - GooseRef "remembers" what you searched for the first time. There is also a new Javascript checker which screens blank or invalid e.mail addresses.
- Redesigned interface to load faster - also reduced screen footprint to deal with smaller monitors.
- Have added theses - although my database for theses is nowhere near as complete as it is for the primary literature. Books and book chapters to come.
- Full keyword searching is now available! And, limited Boolean operators! You are no longer restricted from searching for terms or phrases that showed up in the author/title/journal fields only. Now, the database includes keywords I think are appropriate for the paper in question. Take a look at the keyword and Boolean help pages for more details.
- Fixed a bug in the number of references printed (May 10, 1996)
- Although I am resisting as much as possible the use of many of the proprietary HTML 3.0 extensions made by NetScape, I have added a few (frames) to the GooseRef main page for those of you using NetScape 2.xx. For those of you using other browsers, or NetScape<2.xx, you (hopefully) won't see anything at all.
